Viewtiful Joe

ビューティフルジョー

An action‑platformer developed directed by Hideki Kamiya, remembered as one of the defining “stylised action” titles of its era, blending side‑scrolling beat‑’em‑up mechanics with cel‑shaded visuals and a tongue‑in‑cheek superhero narrative.

Description

Viewtiful Joe follows Joe, an ordinary movie fan who is pulled into “Movieland” after his girlfriend Silvia is kidnapped. Inside this cinematic world, Joe gains a VFX (Visual Effects) suit that grants him powers inspired by film editing techniques: “Slow” to slow time, “Mach Speed” to accelerate, and “Zoom In” to heighten dramatic impact. These powers are used both in combat and puzzle‑solving, creating a unique rhythm where players manipulate the flow of action like a director cutting film.

Viewtiful Joe stood out for its cel‑shaded art style, which gave the game a comic‑book vibrancy, and for its inventive use of “VFX powers” that altered gameplay physics in real time. Its difficulty was deliberately high, echoing Capcom’s arcade heritage, and it rewarded mastery of combos and timing.

The game was part of the “Capcom Five”, a set of titles announced for GameCube exclusivity, though most including Viewtiful Joe later went multi‑platform. It received strong critical acclaim, praised for originality, humour, and challenge, and spawned sequels (Viewtiful Joe 2, Red Hot Rumble, Double Trouble) as well as an anime adaptation. Despite this, the franchise faded after its developer Clover Studio was dissolved in 2007, with its creative DNA carried forward into later PlatinumGames projects like Bayonetta.

Viewtiful Joe is a bit of a cult classic, a playful, stylish experiment that combined superhero parody with demanding action mechanics, and a showcase of Clover Studio’s creativity before its transformation into PlatinumGames.
