Metroid Dread

メトロイド ドレッド

A side-scrolling action-adventure game marking the fifth main instalment in the series, continuing Samus Aran’s story with stealth and exploration mechanics. The first new 2D Metroid game in nearly 20 years.

Description

Metroid Dread places the player on the planet ZDR, where Samus investigates a mysterious transmission and confronts the threat of the X parasite. The narrative unfolds through exploration of interconnected regions, each filled with hazards, enemies, and secrets. The central theme is survival against overwhelming odds, with Samus hunted by robotic E.M.M.I. units that patrol specific zones. These encounters introduce stealth mechanics, requiring the player to hide, reduce noise, or use the Phantom Cloak to avoid detection.

Gameplay retains the traditional 2D Metroid structure of exploration, combat, and progression through upgrades. Players acquire new abilities such as the Spider Magnet for climbing magnetic surfaces and the Storm Missile for multi‑target attacks, which open previously inaccessible areas. Combat combines free‑aim shooting, melee counters, and powerful temporary weapons like the Omega Blaster, used to destroy E.M.M.I. units. The design encourages backtracking to uncover secrets and complete the map, with completion times and item collection unlocking gallery rewards.

Development of the game began conceptually in the mid‑2000s for the Nintendo DS but was halted due to technical limitations. After MercurySteam’s work on Metroid: Samus Returns (2017), producer Yoshio Sakamoto revived the project, leading to its announcement at E3 2021 and release later that year.

Metroid Dread was praised for its fluid controls, challenging encounters, and faithful continuation of the series’ exploration formula. Critics highlighted the tension of E.M.M.I. chases and the satisfaction of mastering Samus’s abilities, though as expected with such games, it is difficult and not suitable for more modern players who find challenges unpleasant. It won Best Action/Adventure Game at The Game Awards 2021 and was named among the year’s best titles by multiple outlets. Retrospectively, it is remembered as the fastest‑selling entry in the franchise, surpassing three million copies worldwide, and as the definitive modern 2D Metroid. It remains associated with the thrill of exploration and the fear of being hunted.
