Dragon Quest X: Mezameshi Itsutsu no Shuzoku Online is the tenth mainline Dragon Quest and the series’ first MMORPG, gathering players into the shared world of Astoltia (アストルティア). The player begins with a custom character and can choose from five races, matching the subtitle’s “five tribes,” while still following a large-scale story in the traditional Dragon Quest style.

The gameplay blends familiar series ideas with MMO structure. Battles retain command-style Dragon Quest decision-making, but characters can move freely during combat, and players can cooperate with others in real time. The game six starting vocations: warrior, mage, priest, martial artist, thief, and minstrel; alongside character creation, quests, crafting, item production, housing, interior customisation, letters, item sending, and an in-game bazaar economy. The game was positioned as online but still recognisably Dragon Quest, emphasising a grand story, familiar monsters, fixed subscription fees, without gacha-style additional charging.

Dragon Quest X marked the moment Japan’s most conservative and tradition-heavy RPG franchise fully entered MMORPG territory while trying to remain accessible to solo players and series fans. Unusually the game required a 16GB or larger USB memory device in addition to broadband internet access to play. The Wii is the original launch platform for the game although the online service ended on 15 November 2017. Later platforms continued the online game, including Wii U, Windows, PS4, Switch, among more. It was never officially released in English-speaking territories making this a Japan-only mainline Dragon Quest entry and one of the most region-specific major RPG releases on the Wii.
