The LEGO Movie Videogame

A fast-paced, cinematic adaptation that prioritises the visual consistency of the film over the sprawling open-world exploration of previous LEGO titles. It serves as a stylistic departure for the series, being the first entry where the entire environment,  not just interactive objects, is constructed solely from virtual LEGO bricks to mimic the movie’s unique stop-motion aesthetic.

Description

The LEGO Movie Videogame follows the journey of Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary construction worker who is mistakenly identified as the “Special”, the key to saving the world from the tyrannical Lord Business. The story is delivered through clips taken directly from the film, supplemented by original voice work from the primary cast, including Will Ferrell and Morgan Freeman. The atmosphere is relentlessly high-energy and comedic, successfully capturing the everything is awesome spirit of the film across its iconic locations.

Gameplay retains the classic LEGO formula of light puzzle-solving and combat but introduces mechanics specific to the Master Builder lore. Regular characters like Emmet must collect Instruction Manuals to trigger a fast-paced mini-game where players select the correct LEGO piece from a wheel to build specific structures. Conversely, Master Builders can identify glowing environmental components to frantically rebuild them into new, creative tools. On the Wii U, the GamePad is used for off-TV play and as a touch-based interface for character selection, though it remains under-utilised compared to the bespoke features of LEGO City Undercover.

The game was viewed as a more focused, albeit shorter, entry in the TT Games library. Critics praised the gorgeous visual overhaul and the witty script, but many pointed out the shorter campaign length (approximately 10–12 hours) and the presence of significant load times between the small hub worlds. Reception was generally positive but highlighted the fragmented nature of the storytelling, which relied heavily on players having already seen the movie to fill in the gaps. It was followed by The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame, which attempted to blend these mechanics with the open-world discovery style of LEGO Worlds. While it lacks the sheer map density of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, it remains a good example of a direct movie tie-in that feels like an extension of the theatrical experience rather than a generic adaptation.
