Hyrule Warriors

ゼルダそう ハイラルオールスターズ

A Musō‑style action hack-and-slash game combining the large-scale battles of Dynasty Warriors with the iconic characters and world of The Legend of Zelda. It showed off the Wii U’s ability to render hundreds of active entities. This Warriors crossover would spawn several sequels.

Description

Hyrule Warriors follows a newly forged alliance between the Hyrulean Army and legendary heroes from across time to thwart the sorceress Cia, whose obsession with Link has led her to fracture the Triforce and merge distinct eras of history. The story acts as a greatest hits of the Zelda franchise, weaving together characters and locales from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. The atmosphere is one of grand-scale heroic fantasy, moving away from the solitary exploration of the main series toward the chaotic energy of a world at war. It introduces original characters like the upbeat sorceress Lana and the draconic general Volga, framing the struggle as a multiversal clash for the fate of the Triforce.

Gameplay revolves around the strategic capture of keeps and the elimination of thousands of enemy grunts to lure out powerful boss commanders. Mechanics include a light and heavy attack combo system, further enhanced by the Focus Spirit gauge and signature Zelda sub-weapons like the Boomerang, Hookshot, and Bombs, which are used to expose enemy weak points. The Wii U GamePad is integrated as a secondary interface, providing a real-time tactical map and inventory management. This version is uniquely defined by its asynchronous local co-op, where Player 1 views the action exclusively on the GamePad screen while Player 2 utilises the TV, eliminating the need for a split-screen and preserving a wider field of view for both participants. The technical performance on the Wii U was a major point of discussion. While single-player generally maintained a stable 30 fps at 720p, the local co-op mode saw a significant resolution drop to approximately 480p and frequent framerate dips when both players engaged in “Special Attacks” simultaneously.

Since this original 2014 release, the Hyrule Warriors sub-series has expanded into a significant pillar of Nintendo’s collaborative efforts. While this Wii U entry established the foundation, the later 3DS port, Hyrule Warriors Legends, introduced mechanical staples like instant character switching and the “My Fairy” companion system. The series eventually traded the “timeline-mashup” for a more narrative-heavy approach. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (2020) featured a prequel story to Breath of the Wild (2017), and similar between Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (2025) and Tear of the Kingdom (2023). The Wii U original relied on a rigorous post-launch DLC model and amiibo integration to expand its roster and map count. A later Definitive Edition was released containing all DLC on the Nintendo Switch, albeit without the GamePad functionality.

At launch, the reception was a blend of technical praise and structural criticism. Critics lauded the game as a love letter to Zelda fans, praising the high-fidelity models and the thrill of using legendary weapons like the Master Sword in a high-density combat environment. However, it was frequently criticised for the repetitive nature of its grind, particularly in the original Adventure Mode, which required extensive replaying of missions to farm rare materials for the badge-based upgrade system. In this sense it remains a more “pure” Musou experience, where players are committed to a single character’s perspective for the duration of a battle. Despite the performance issues, it was regarded as one of the Wii U’s most robust third-party efforts, successfully proving that the Zelda license could thrive outside its traditional genre boundaries.
