Description
Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 was the product of a landmark licensing agreement between Capcom and SNK, allowing both companies’ flagship fighting franchises to collide. The game’s premise was framed as an international martial arts tournament sponsored by the Garcia Financial Clique and the Masters Foundation, serving as a narrative excuse to pit Capcom’s and SNK’s rosters against one another.
The playable cast drew heavily from the most recognisable faces of each company. On the Capcom side, characters included Ryu, Ken, Chun‑Li, Guile, Morrigan, and M. Bison, while SNK contributed Kyo, Iori, Terry, Mai, Kim, and Ryo, among others. In total, the arcade release featured 33 fighters, with additional hidden variants and “EX” versions.
The game introduced the Ratio system, where players built teams of up to four characters, each assigned a point value from one to four. The total ratio could not exceed four, forcing players to balance powerful solo fighters against larger, weaker teams. Matches were fought in a tag‑style elimination format, with the last team standing declared the winner. The control scheme and presentation leaned toward Capcom’s Street Fighter Alpha style, but with SNK’s characters redrawn to match Capcom’s sprite aesthetic.
The game was first released on Sega’s NAOMI arcade board, ensuring smooth animation and vibrant presentation. The Dreamcast port was highly faithful, offering additional modes such as Training and Versus, and became the definitive home version. A slightly expanded update, Capcom vs. SNK: Pro, was later released with balance tweaks and two extra characters (Dan Hibiki and Joe Higashi).
The game was well received, not just for the novelty of the crossover, but also the quality of the sprite work, and the strategic depth of the Ratio system. The game was successful enough to warrant a sequel, Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, which expanded the roster and introduced the celebrated “Groove” system.
