AX-101
エーエックス101AX-101 is a first-person rail shooter set in a dystopian future featuring full-motion video cutscenes and detailed backgrounds.
Description
A rail shooter known for its heavy use of full-motion video (FMV) and a sci-fi storyline set in the year 2500. Earth is under siege by a hostile alien race called the Gurzons, and players take on the role of a starfighter pilot sent to the planet Prism to retrieve the titular A/X-101 weapon system and turn the tide of war. Gameplay unfolds from a first-person cockpit view, with players using Laser Cannons and limited Fusion Warheads to blast through waves of enemies. The lasers weaken with continuous use but recharge when idle, adding a layer of tactical pacing.
Despite its ambitious cinematic presentation, A/X-101 was widely criticized for prioritizing visuals over gameplay. The FMV sequences, while impressive for the time, often obscure enemy projectiles and interrupt the action, leading to frustrating trial-and-error progression. The game’s difficulty is compounded by limited continues and a regenerating shield system that rewards cautious play. It received poor reviews, some as low as 4%! Retrospectively it is a good example of the potential, downfall, and general experimentation of the FMV era and early CD-based gaming.
