Description

Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D platform game developed to provide Sega with a mascot character to rival Nintendo’s Mario, following an internal design contest at Sega of Japan. The winning concept, designed by Naoto Ohshima, was a blue hedgehog capable of rolling into a ball and attacking enemies at high speed. Development was led by programmer Yuji Naka and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara, with music composed by Masato Nakamura of the J‑pop band Dreams Come True.

The story follows Sonic as he battles Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, who has imprisoned the animals of South Island inside robotic shells. Sonic must traverse six themed “Zones” (Green Hill, Marble, Spring Yard, Labyrinth, Star Light, and Scrap Brain), each divided into three Acts, before confronting Robotnik in a final showdown. Along the way, Sonic collects Rings (which act as health), destroys enemies with his Spin Attack, and can enter bonus stages to collect Chaos Emeralds.

The game was first released in Europe in June 1991, immediately followed by North America, and then finally Japan the following month. In North America, it replaced Altered Beast as the pack‑in title bundled with the Genesis console to boost the system’s popularity. Sonic the Hedgehog was praised for its speed‑based gameplay, colourful graphics, and responsive controls, offering a distinct alternative to Nintendo’s slower, precision‑based platformers. It became the best‑selling Mega Drive title selling over 4 million copies worldwide, becoming and establishing Sonic as Sega’s enduring mascot.
