Time Soldiers

バトル フィールド

A scrolling action shooter built around time travel. It drops the cooperative play of the original Arcade but remains a competent shooter.

Description

Time Soldiers adapts the arcade original into an 8‑bit format for the Master System, presenting a narrative where players move through different historical eras to rescue comrades captured by the alien Gylend. The setting shifts between prehistoric landscapes, Roman arenas, World War II battlefields, and futuristic zones, with each stage introducing enemies and hazards themed to its period.

Gameplay uses a multidirectional shooting system, allowing players to fire in eight directions while moving independently. Power‑ups provide stronger weapons such as flamethrowers, bazookas, and laser guns, while bosses guard the portals that lead to the next time zone. The original Time Soldiers arcade release is designed for two players simultaneously, with cooperative play as a central feature. The Sega Master System version, however, is a single‑player adaptation. It keeps the same design of rescuing comrades across different eras, but the cooperative element is removed, with adjusted enemy patterns and simplified graphics to suit the hardware. Passwords are used to resume progress, reflecting the console’s adaptation of arcade difficulty.

The game was noted for its variety of settings and its attempt to capture the arcade’s fast pace, though criticised for the reduced visual detail and the absence of a two‑player mode. Retrospectively it can be appreciated for its unusual time‑travel theme and its range of weapons, but often compared unfavourably with the more fluid arcade version. It was one of the console’s more ambitious action shooters.
