A tennis game offering multiple play modes, a roster of 16 players with distinct stats, and light RPG‑style progression. Developed in Japan, however only sold in PAL territories, unlike the earlier Super Tennis/Great Tennis. Same UPC as F-16 Fighter (!).
Description
One of the more feature‑rich 8‑bit tennis titles of its time, Tennis Ace lets you choose from 16 fictional players, each rated in technical skill, power, and speed, and classed as a Net Player, Stroke Player, or All‑Rounder. Matches are viewed from a slightly elevated top‑down perspective, with smooth player animation and responsive controls. Serving requires precise timing: toss the ball with one button press, then strike it at the right moment to avoid faults. Rallies allow for directional shot placement, lobs, and volleys.
Modes include Exhibition, Tournament, and Training. Winning matches grants experience points (two for Exhibition, five for Tournament) that can be spent to improve your player’s stats, adding a light progression element uncommon in sports games of the era. The AI offers a reasonable challenge, and the variety of player attributes encourages experimentation.
Compared to earlier Sega tennis efforts like Great Tennis, Tennis Ace was praised in contemporary reviews for its fluid controls, expanded options, and replay value. While the steep learning curve for serving could frustrate newcomers, it was regarded as one of the Master System’s stronger sports titles, holding its own against other late‑’80s tennis games on competing platforms. Although it cannot compete with the graphics of later generations, it is interesting to see how far 8-bit gaming could be pushed towards the twilight of its generation.
