Description

BLUE SEED ~Kushinada Hirokuden~ is inspired by the anime adaptation of Yuzo Takada’s manga, the game follows Momiji Fujimiya, a seemingly ordinary schoolgirl who discovers she carries the power of the legendary princess Kushinada. A secret government agency recruits her to combat supernatural threats, where she and her teammates investigate outbreaks of monstrous Aragami across Japan.

Unlike many RPGs of its era, progression is structured around individual missions. You receive assignments from the agency director, travel to new locations, gather information from NPCs, explore dungeons, and uncover the source of each supernatural incident. Party members possess unique field abilities that are required to solve environmental puzzles and access hidden routes, encouraging players to make strategic use of the entire cast. Most distinctive is the combat system. Battles are fought using cards that determine offensive, defensive, and support actions. A character’s agility affects how many cards can be played each turn, making success dependent on planning and understanding enemy behaviour rather than grinding statistics. This unusual structure gives the game a more tactical feel than many contemporary Japanese RPGs.

BLUE SEED ~Kushinada Hirokuden~ extensively uses the anime artwork, voice acting, and full-motion video sequences. The story functions largely as an original side adventure that remains consistent with the anime while introducing new scenarios and characters. It was one of the platform’s earliest RPGs and an interesting licensed title that blended visual storytelling with unconventional RPG mechanics. While the West was hyper-fixated on cutting edge, but mediocre 3D, this title is a great example of how the Japanese Saturn library made the most of the technology available.
