inFamous: First Light
A standalone action‑adventure that expanded the inFAMOUS universe by focusing on Abigail “Fetch” Walker and her Neon powers, remembered for its condensed narrative, arena challenges, and as a companion prequel to Second Son.
Description
inFAMOUS First Light is both a prequel and a self‑contained expansion to inFAMOUS Second Son. It placed players in the role of Abigail “Fetch” Walker, a conduit introduced in Second Son, whose Neon abilities became the centrepiece of the experience. The story is framed by Fetch’s imprisonment in the Department of Unified Protection’s Curdun Cay facility, where she recounts the events that led to her capture. Through flashbacks, players follow her struggles with her brother Brent, her entanglement with Seattle’s criminal underworld, and her eventual confrontation with betrayal and loss.
Gameplay retained the open‑world structure of Second Son but narrowed its focus. Fetch’s Neon powers allowed her to sprint at high speed, scale buildings with fluidity, and unleash energy‑based attacks. The remixed mechanics emphasised agility and precision, with new features such as Neon races that rewarded skill points for upgrading abilities. Combat was streamlined around Fetch’s unique move set, distinguishing her from Delsin Rowe, the protagonist of Second Son. A major addition was the Arena Challenges, holographic combat simulations within Curdun Cay. These modes offered wave‑based battles and rescue missions, introducing new enemy types such as Demons. Both Fetch and Delsin could be used in these challenges, and performance was scored globally, encouraging replayability and competition.
The presentation leaned heavily into Fetch’s perspective, with a visual style that emphasised the luminous qualities of her powers. Neon trails, glowing projectiles, and vibrant graffiti mini‑games reinforced her identity as a character distinct from the mainline protagonist. The narrative tone was darker and more personal, exploring themes of trauma, addiction, and redemption, while still maintaining the series’ comic‑book energy.
At release, First Light was praised for Fetch’s characterisation, who really is a stronger lead than Delsin. The visuals, fluid traversal, and arena challenges were also commended. Some complained about the story’s brevity and limited scope, but it was priced at a budget‑priced standalone and is a valuable expansion of the franchise. In retrospect, it broadened the narrative of the inFAMOUS universe, successfully giving a supporting character her own spotlight. It refined the Neon powers into a distinct play style, and demonstrated how standalone expansions could deliver focused, character‑driven experiences without requiring a full sequel.
