The Last Tinker: City of Colors

A colourful action‑adventure that blends platforming traditions with a story about imagination and emotional harmony.

Description

The Last Tinker: City of Colors follows Koru, a young boy from the slums of Colortown, who becomes an unlikely hero when a force known as the Bleakness begins draining the world of its vibrancy. Instead of relying on conventional platforming mechanics, the game emphasises free‑running movement and combat abilities tied to colours. Each colour represents an emotion, red to enrage, green to instil fear, blue to sadden, and these powers are used both in battles and in solving environmental puzzles. The absence of a jump button was a deliberate design choice, setting it apart from the genre’s usual rhythm and aligning it more with fluid traversal systems.

The game’s aesthetic is heavily stylised, with districts of Colortown designed as handcrafted environments, each themed around a dominant colour. Its tone recalls earlier 3D platformers such as Jak and Daxter or Banjo‑Kazooie, but with a more allegorical bent, using colour as a metaphor for creativity and diversity. The narrative structure is straightforward, yet it carries a thematic weight about restoring unity to a fractured world. The Last Tinker was valued for this vibrant art direction, its imaginative premise, and the way it channelled the spirit of classic platformers while attempting something different. Its strengths lay in the charm of its world, the accessibility of its mechanics, and the symbolic use of colour as both theme and gameplay system. However, the simplified combat and traversal systems limited its depth, left it to be more of a light, whimsical adventure than a mechanically demanding platformer.
