A turn‑based tactics game that reimagines the classic Space Hulk board game with RPG progression, fog of war, and expanded campaigns set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Description
Space Hulk: Ascension built upon the studio’s 2013 digital adaptation of Space Hulk but moved away from strict board‑game fidelity toward a more expansive PC‑style tactics experience. Players commanded squads of Space Marine Terminators tasked with boarding derelict spacecraft and purging them of Tyranid Genestealers. The game introduced several innovations: dice rolls were deemphasised to reduce randomness, units gained experience points and unlocked skills through RPG‑style progression, and fog of war obscured maps to heighten tension. Campaigns were broadened to include multiple chapters and expansions featuring different Space Marine chapters such as the Salamanders and Dark Angels.
This PlayStation 4 port (and to Xbox One in 2018) was Full Control’s final major project before the studio ceased new development. The game nicely provided depth, progression systems, and atmosphere, but suffered from repetitive missions and limited polish compared to larger tactical franchises. Space Hulk: Ascension retrospectively was an ambitious but niche reworking of the board game, appealing to dedicated Warhammer 40,000 fans while illustrating the challenges of translating tabletop tension into digital form.
