Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro
A force-feedback gaming joystick designed to deliver immersive tactile responses and precision control for PC simulations and action titles. Bundled with force feedback compatible version of Interstate ’76 and MDK: Mission Laguna Beach. Separately, came accompanied with a driver disc.
Description
The Microsoft SideWinder Force Feedback Pro features a robust ergonomic shell housing a digital-optical stick mechanism and two DC motors, providing up to 100 simultaneous force feedback effects for realistic sensations such as recoil, collisions, and terrain resistance. This is not just vibration, as is often mislabelled as “force feedback”, the stick can move in each direction, fighting your movements. It offers eight programmable buttons plus a main trigger, adjustable spring tension, and a shift button that doubles input functions. The unit includes a built-in 16-bit processor and a digital-optical “camera” to track position with high accuracy and no drift. Connectivity is through a standard game port (DB-15), powered by a large dedicated 12 V DC adapter.
Internally, the joystick uses a 16-bit processor to handle complex force calculations locally, offloading CPU overhead on the host PC and improving responsiveness. The optical sensors offer precision superior to potentiometer-based joysticks, and motors deliver layered resistance levels and directional haptic cues. Included Game Device Profiler software enables users to customise force intensity, program button macros, and adjust spring settings, while the shift mechanism effectively doubles control options for simulation workflows.
At release, the joystick was relatively highly priced but was great value for what it is. Contemporary reviews highlighted its “true-to-life feedback” and technical sophistication, praising the precision of its optical sensors and ability to handle multiple simultaneous forces. Criticism focused on its game port reliance and power and compatibility limitations as USB began to emerge. Retrospectively the Force Feedback Pro was a high watermark in joystick design with its excellent engineering. Although the lack of USB prevents it from being still usable decades later, but it does provide support for a range of software on period accurate hardware.
