A first‑person shooter set in 2065, combining a cybernetics‑driven campaign, competitive multiplayer, and a fully fleshed‑out Zombies mode into one of the most content‑rich entries in the series.
Description
Black Ops III is the twelfth entry in the franchise and the direct sequel to Black Ops II. The campaign takes place forty years later, in a world reshaped by climate change, advanced robotics, and cybernetic augmentation. Players assume the role of a soldier enhanced with Direct Neural Interface technology, which allows access to special abilities and fluid movement systems such as wall‑running, thrust jumps, and power slides. Unlike earlier campaigns, this one was designed for four‑player cooperative play, with larger, more open levels and branching progression.
The game’s multiplayer builds on the franchise’s competitive foundation, adding unique specialists with signature weapons or abilities, deeper customisation, and ranking systems. The fluid movement mechanics make traversal faster and more vertical than in previous entries, reshaping map design and pacing. This mode was widely praised for its depth and replayability. The Zombies mode is one of the most celebrated aspects of Black Ops III. It features its own narrative arc, beginning with Shadows of Evil and continuing through multiple downloadable maps. The Zombies Chronicles expansion later remastered eight classic maps from earlier titles, cementing this entry as a definitive experience for fans of the undead survival formula. Black Ops 4 wouldn’t later build on these mechanics and focused entirely on the multiplayer‑centric experience.
The game was mostly well received with the sheer amount of content, the innovation in movement systems, and the Zombies experience. However, the campaign drew criticism for its convoluted story and lack of emotional impact. PS3 and Xbox 360 versions had performance issues and lacked the campaign, but hey, they were ancient technology at this point. It was the top‑selling retail game in the US in 2015 and eventually sold over 43 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most successful titles of the eighth generation. In retrospect, Black Ops III is remembered as a turning point in the series. It was ambitious in scope, experimental in mechanics, and particularly influential for its Zombies content.
