Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged Volume 1

A compilation disc of early Xbox Live Arcade titles. It was designed both as a sampler of the service and as a way to introduce players without broadband access to the downloadable games ecosystem that Microsoft was building.

Description

Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged Volume 1 contains six full titles earlier available by download through Xbox Live Arcade:

  • Bejeweled 2
  • Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved
  • Hardwood Backgammon
  • Outpost Kaloki X
  • Texas Hold ’em
  • Wik and the Fable of Souls

It also contains the following demos:

  • Feeding Frenzy
  • Marble Blast Ultra
  • Uno

The compilation was significant because it marked Microsoft’s effort to promote Xbox Live Arcade as a core part of the Xbox 360 ecosystem. By bundling popular and a varied genres of titles, the disc showcased the breadth of experiences available through the new digital store front. It also served as a bridge for players who did not yet have reliable broadband, giving them access to downloadable content in physical form. From an archival perspective, Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged Volume 1 is important because it provides a physical copy of several titles no longer available. It reflects the burgeoning digital distribution platforms as it was becoming mainstream but still needed physical retail support. It also highlights Microsoft’s strategy of engaging with smaller, experimental titles alongside blockbuster releases, paving the way for the later success of Xbox Live Arcade as a platform for indie developers.
