James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire

A first person shooter based on an original espionage narrative. Showcased a hybrid approach to mission design by blending traditional gunplay with vehicle combat and gadget based exploration.

Description

James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire involves James Bond investigating a global conspiracy led by the industrialist Adrian Malprave, who plans to replace world leaders with clones created by a corrupt biological research company. Players travel to various international locations including a Swiss embassy, a botanical research facility in Romania, and an underwater base in the South China Sea. The story serves as the first original script for the franchise after the publisher transitioned away from direct film adaptations. While the character models use a generic appearance rather than a specific actor’s likeness, the game maintains the cinematic presentation of the films through a fully voiced cast and a soundtrack featuring remixes of the orchestral series theme.

Gameplay is divided between first person shooting, on rails segments, and high speed driving missions. Players utilize a wide array of tools concealed within a mobile phone, such as the Q-Claw for grappling to high ledges and a laser for cutting through locks. Completing specific tasks or using gadgets in creative ways rewards players with Bond Moves, which contribute to a scoring system used to unlock upgrades like the golden gun or increased health. The experience also features a split screen multiplayer mode for up to four players, which includes the ability to add computer controlled bots to local matches. This title is often compared to its predecessor The World Is Not Enough due to its shared shooter lineage and was followed by 007: Nightfire, which refined many of the mechanics introduced here.

At the time of release, reviewers praised the game for its visual variety and the seamless integration of driving levels that broke up the standard shooting sequences. Critics noted that the campaign was relatively short, though they highlighted the replay value provided by the medal system and the unlockable rewards. Contemporary players remember it for its arcade style physics and the flexibility of its multiplayer options on the system. It is now regarded as a foundational entry in the era of original Bond stories that moved the franchise beyond the constraints of movie plots. The release remains noted for its technical polish and for bridging the gap between classic console shooters and modern action adventures.
