Mafia III
An open world action adventure touching on true crime against the backdrop of 1968 American political and social issues.
Description
Mafia III shifts the series into a grittier, more politically charged space, set in the fictional New Bordeaux, a fictional 1968 New Orleans. Players step into the role of Lincoln Clay, a Black Vietnam War veteran whose surrogate family is betrayed by the Italian mob. Told partly through a retrospective “true crime” documentary format, the story tackles racism, corruption, and revenge with an unflinching tone, backed by strong performances and a period‑authentic soundtrack. The open‑world structure revolves around dismantling enemy rackets, seizing districts, and assigning them to underbosses, with choices affecting loyalty and story outcomes. Combat blends weighty third‑person gunplay, brutal melee, and stealth, while driving offers both arcade and simulation handling.
Compared to its predecessors, Mafia III trades the tightly scripted, linear missions of Mafia and Mafia II for a fully open‑world, territory‑control model. This modernised approach drew on influences from blaxploitation cinema, Vietnam War films, and contemporaries like Grand Theft Auto V, Sleeping Dogs, and Far Cry’s outpost systems. While praised for its bold narrative, atmosphere, and music, it suffered from repetitive mission design, technical issues, and visual compromises. Many agreed its story and setting outshone its gameplay loop, leaving it as one of the series’ most ambitious yet divisive entries.
