Screamride

A sandbox construction and destruction simulation built around speed, physics, and spectacle. Presents engineered environments as playgrounds for both creativity and chaos.

Description

Screamride situates amusement park rides as the central stage for play, framing roller coasters not only as attractions but as vehicles for experimentation. There’s no background story, it focuses on the thrill of engineering and the consequences of excess. It is notable as being on of the few true Xbox One exclusives, without a PC release, although there was a Xbox 360 version.

The game is divided into three modes. In Engineer mode, players design and construct roller coasters, balancing speed, safety, and spectacle. In Screamrider mode, they directly pilot rides, steering through loops and corkscrews while managing momentum and precision. In Demolition Expert mode, the focus shifts to destruction, with players launching cabins into structures to cause calculated chaos. The physics engine underpins all three, situating Screamride as both a creative tool and a destructive sandbox.

The game positions itself within a lineage of amusement‑focused titles, echoing the creative ethos of RollerCoaster Tycoon while emphasising more the direct control and physical impact. It is much more reminiscent of the other 1999 rollercoaster title, JetCoaster Dream (Coaster Works) on the Dreamcast, which also focused primarily on the engineering and physics aspects.

Contemporary reception noted the novelty of its destructive mechanics and the technical polish of its physics, but criticised the limited scope of its creative tools compared with full park simulations. It can be entertaining in bursts, but lacks depth for sustained play. Retrospectively, a distinctive experiment within the amusement genre, merging construction with demolition.
