Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 4
The first title in the popular baseball series to appear on the N64. The move from the Super Famicom saw analogue batting and pitching, polygonal stadiums, expanded commentary, playable pitchers in Success mode, and recurring characters Akio Yabe and Mamoru Ikari.
Description
Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 4 was the beginning a run of three numbered instalments on the Nintendo 64. Its professional teams reflect the opening of the 1997 Japanese baseball season, although the cartridge’s early production deadline resulted in several roster omissions and inaccuracies. It features modes of Exhibition, Pennant, Success, Arrange, and Camp for one or two players. Batting retains the series’ movable contact cursor, but changes its shape from a rectangle to an oval and allows it to be controlled directly with the Nintendo 64 controller’s analogue stick. The cursor responds to both the direction and degree of the stick’s movement, enabling players to shift rapidly across the strike zone or make smaller positional adjustments, while traditional digital control remains available. Pitching adopts comparable analogue placement, making the controller particularly well suited to the series’ emphasis on precisely positioning pitches and swings.
Stadiums are rendered with three-dimensional polygonal scenery rather than the sprite-based presentation of the Super Famicom games, producing smoother camera movement and more natural trajectories for airborne balls. Nagoya Dome and Osaka Dome make their series debuts, while Nagoya Stadium and Fujiidera Stadium make their final appearances in a numbered instalment. Expanded cartridge capacity also permits a greater variety of commentary from announcer Noriyuki Abe, including spoken player names, while the proportions and facial design of the series’ super-deformed players are revised. The campaign introduces Akio Yabe and Mamoru Ikari, who would become two of the franchise’s most recognisable recurring characters. At this stage their personalities were yet fully established: Yabe appears primarily as an ordinary fellow rookie, while Ikari is portrayed more as an antagonistic rival.
Success mode continues the professional minor-league setting introduced in Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 3 but is now expanded to pitchers. The player creates a rookie who has three years to earn promotion to the first team. Training, matches, coaching relationships, physical condition, and random events determine the player’s development, after which a successful character can be registered and added to a customised team. The mode is comparatively light on narrative compared to Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū 5, which expanded its characters, relationships, rival teams, and dramatic events. Ultimately, game was a technological and mechanical transition to the N64 rather than an expansion of the series. Its analogue controls, generally balanced competition, smoother three-dimensional presentation, and improved Success systems established the technical foundation for the series’ Nintendo 64 period.
