A whimsical blend of real‑time strategy, puzzle‑solving, and exploration, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Purchased at launch I had no expectations but the game was instantly meaningful.
Description
The first Pikmin debuted just after the GameCube launch and is set on an Earth‑like planet called PNF‑404. You follow Captain Olimar who commands loyal, plant‑like creatures called Pikmin. These Pikmin come in different colors, each with unique abilities like resisting fire, carrying heavy objects, or swimming. You can direct them to gather treasures, fight hostile wildlife, and overcome environmental obstacles. The core loop mixes time management with resource strategy: days are short, so you must plan routes, multitask with different Pikmin types, and protect them from hazards before nightfall.
As a new franchise you sometimes go into these games blind. There’s a good chance it is a one-off, although like in this case, maybe it will spawn many sequels. Pikmin was instantly endearing, between the lush environments and responsive personalities of the Pikmin. Retrospectively it’s easy to see how it keeps a very narrow scope of gameplay, but this was highly effective. The game’s perspective of the miniature, seemed refreshing at the time, with vegetation seemingly rendered with high quality. The gameplay although linear, felt open and accessible. The game’s success brought on the Pikmin series, beloved for its charming art style, gentle humour, and surprisingly emotional moments.
