Shin Momotarō Densetsu

しん ろうでんせつ

A Hudson RPG that reimagines the Japanese folk hero Momotarō’s adventures, blending turn‑based combat, exploration, and a rich tapestry of mythological characters. This is an uncommon reprint/revision model.

Description

Shin Momotarō Densetsu (New Momotarō Legend) is a role‑playing game that retells the Japanese folktale of Momotarō, the “Peach Boy” who sets out to defeat marauding oni, expanding the simple legend into a sprawling fantasy adventure. The game opens with Momotarō, raised by an elderly couple, leaving his home to protect the land from demonic forces. Along the way he is joined by his traditional animal companions: a dog, monkey, and a pheasant, with their own abilities, and meets a wide cast of characters drawn from Japanese mythology, including figures like Princess Kaguya. The narrative gradually escalates from local skirmishes to epic battles against powerful demons and even journeys to the moon, blending humour, drama, and folklore in a way that was distinctive for its time.

Gameplay follows a traditional turn‑based RPG structure, with exploration of towns, dungeons, and an overworld map. Battles are presented from a first‑person perspective, with menu‑driven commands for physical attacks, magic, and item use. Progression comes through levelling up, acquiring new skills, and upgrading equipment, while side quests and hidden events reward curiosity. The game’s art style is colourful and charming, with expressive sprites and environments that reflect its mythological roots.

Arriving during a peak era for JRPGs dominated by series like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, rather than competing directly it leaned into Japanese folklore, humour, and a whimsical tone, expanding the Momotarō legend into a sprawling, myth‑infused adventure. It shared thematic space with culturally rooted titles such as Ganbare Goemon and Tengai Makyō, offering a familiar turn‑based structure but distinguished by its art style, satirical edge, and integration of well‑known folk characters. Reception in Japan was positive, with praise for its charm, storytelling, and cultural flavour, though its conventional battle system kept it from standing out mechanically. It sold respectably and maintained the Momotarō RPG brand’s relevance into the 2000s.
