Description

Star Fox Guard is a spin‑off released alongside Star Fox Zero for the Wii U. Originally conceived as “Project Guard” during Shigeru Miyamoto’s experimental phase, it was rebranded into the Star Fox universe to give it a familiar identity. The game’s premise is deceptively simple: players defend Grippy Toad’s mining facilities from waves of invading robots. Instead of piloting Arwings, you control a network of twelve security cameras placed around each base. The gameplay unfolds on two screens: the TV shows the full grid of camera feeds, while the Wii U GamePad lets you switch between them and directly control their turrets. Success depends on quick observation, rapid switching, and prioritising threats, creating a frantic tower‑defence‑like rhythm.

The game plays with surveillance and multitasking, turning the player into a kind of security operator rather than a starfighter pilot. Its connection to the Star Fox universe is rather light: Grippy Toad is Slippy’s uncle, and the robots are framed as industrial saboteurs. The core experience is more about puzzle‑like defence than space combat. Reception was modest but positive among those who appreciated its originality, particularly the inventive use of the Wii U’s dual‑screen setup and the tension of juggling multiple viewpoints. Nintendo did well to market it with the mainline entry, as Star Fox has had some interesting entries that have questioned its identify. This approach as a companion piece to Star Fox Zero, was honest about it being a smaller and more experimental experience. In retrospect, it is one of the Wii U’s quirkier experiments that leaned into the console’s unique hardware features.
