A simulation that allows players to design and ride roller coasters, combining construction mechanics with the thrill of amusement park spectacle and the joy of experimentation.

Description

JetCoaster Dream, released internationally as Coaster Works, is an early 3D roller coaster design simulator. The game allows players to construct and test custom ride layouts using a 3D editor that supports banking, elevation, and structural logic. The game does not incorporate economy or park management, focusing on technical track design and engineering. It is very short in going from basic to advanced levels, letting its sandbox nature provide longevity. A later sequel would really expand in a more complete package.

I played this at launch and it was very engaging, enough to eventually buy again. At the time there was little like this. After all, it predates mainstream titles like RollerCoaster Tycoon, so offered a new and unique experience. Although there were some relatively obscure simulators previously, the major mainstream title preceding this was Theme Park, which was a full park CMS. This game provided a narrow but very well constructed experience that at the time was quite unique.
