Soldiers of Fortune

A Bitmap Brothers’ steampunk run‑and‑gun, known as The Chaos Engine in Europe, featuring six mercenaries, node‑based progression, and cooperative play.

Description

Soldiers of Fortune is the North American title for The Chaos Engine, a top‑down run‑and‑gun action game developed by the Bitmap Brothers and first released for the Amiga in 1993. This port followed later that year, published by Spectrum HoloByte in the United States and Virgin in Europe.

Set in an alternate steampunk‑Victorian world, the story centres on Baron Fortesque, an inventor whose experimental “Chaos Engine” warps reality and mutates humans and animals into grotesque forms. Six mercenaries: the Gentleman, Brigand, Navvie, Mercenary, Thug, and Preacher, are hired to destroy the Engine, each with distinct stats, weapons, and costs.

Gameplay requires players to select two characters; in single‑player, the second is AI‑controlled, while in co‑op a second player can join. Stages are structured around activating nodes to open exits, battling hordes of enemies, collecting keys, and upgrading weapons between levels. The Genesis/Mega Drive version retained the Amiga’s dark steampunk tone and cooperative focus, though with pared‑down graphics and audio due to hardware limitations.

Reception at the time was positive among fans of the genre, who praised its atmosphere, character variety, and challenging co‑op play. Critics noted that while the console port lacked some of the Amiga’s audiovisual impact, it preserved the core mechanics and distinctive style that made the Bitmap Brothers’ original a cult favourite.
