Alone in the Dark: Jack is Back

A cinematic survival horror experience that pushes the boundaries of atmospheric tension through fixed camera perspectives and polygonal character models. It trades the slow burn of cosmic dread for a more aggressive, action oriented encounter with the supernatural.

Description

Alone in the Dark: Jack is Back follows the investigative journey of Edward Carnby as he explores the sinister Hellgate mansion to locate a missing girl named Grace Saunders. The story shifts from the Lovecraftian horror of its predecessor toward a pulpy, occult adventure involving zombified pirates and Voodoo practitioners. The atmosphere is dense and claustrophobic, using the stillness of its pre-rendered environments to heighten the impact of sudden, lethal confrontations. It focuses on a gritty, noir influenced struggle against an immortal pirate captain and his cursed crew.

Gameplay relies on a fixed camera system that frames the action from cinematic angles to mask the transitions between pre-rendered backgrounds. Mechanics involve a rigid tank control scheme where the player must manually pivot the character to line up shots or interact with the environment. This version emphasises combat over puzzle solving, requiring the management of a limited inventory to store various firearms and melee weapons. The Sega Saturn hardware handles the polygonal models with a distinct lack of the texture warping on the PlayStation version, although the frame rate can struggle during crowded encounters. It uses a separate menu screen for map checking and item combination, maintaining a clean display during exploration.

This title is the direct sequel to the original Alone in the Dark and was followed by Alone in the Dark 3, though this specific Saturn port arrived after those entries had already established the genre on home computers. It is frequently compared to Resident Evil, which adopted and refined the same cinematic perspective and tank control framework. While Resident Evil leaned into biological horror, this work remains anchored in the supernatural detective tropes found in Shadow of the Comet. It also shares structural DNA with Clock Tower in its approach to environmental storytelling through scattered notes and diary entries.

Contemporary reviewers praised the game for its impressive visual presentation and the sheer scale of the mansion, though many criticised the clunky combat mechanics and the unforgiving difficulty spikes. The Saturn version was a respectable alternative to the PlayStation port, with reviews praising the clarity of the pre-rendered artwork. The cinematic, multi camera aesthetic contributed to this period’s ever improving game design although its the increased combat over the first game somewhat diluted the horror elements. Retrospectively, this game is a foundational, if frustrating, pioneer of the survival horror genre.

Item note: This is the original European PAL version, and does not have the local Australian labelling. Notably the Australian version was released much later in early 1997, receiving classification in January 1997.
