PlayStation Classic

プレイステーション クラシック

A miniature replica of the original PlayStation, including a selection of 20 games. Includes 2x Controllers, USB + HDMI cables.

Description

The PlayStation Classic is a compact, plug‑and‑play console that shrinks the original PlayStation’s design into a palm‑sized unit. The casing mimics the look of the 1994 hardware, complete with functional buttons for power, reset, and an open‑lid switch, though the disc tray is purely decorative. Internally, it runs on modern components with software emulation replacing the original chipset, and it outputs exclusively through HDMI for both video and audio. Power is supplied via micro‑USB, with no bundled AC adapter, reflecting its design as a lightweight, low‑power device.

Two controllers are included, each a faithful reproduction of the first‑generation PlayStation pad without analogue sticks or vibration motors. They connect through USB rather than the original proprietary ports, but retain the same size, button layout, and feel. Storage is fixed, with no official method to add games beyond the pre‑installed library, and the unit lacks expansion slots or memory card functionality.

The unit contained 20 titles:

  • Battle Arena Toshinden (PAL)
  • Cool Boarders 2 (PAL)
  • Destruction Derby (PAL)
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Grand Theft Auto (PAL)
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Jumping Flash! (PAL)
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mr. Driller
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee (PAL)
  • R4: Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Rayman
  • Resident Evil: Director’s Cut (PAL)
  • Revelations: Persona
  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
  • Syphon Filter
  • Tekken 3 (PAL)
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six (PAL)
  • Twisted Metal
  • Wild Arms

Packaging aside, there were only two versions, this international version and a Japanese/HK/TW model, which fit its era’s distribution. The latter had a lot better software line-up, with many major JRPGs.

Upon release the reception was quite negative. The console relied on the open‑source PCSX emulator rather than a custom solution, which led to laggy performance, frame rate drops, texture flickering, and input delay across its twenty bundled titles. The internal hardware needed was cheap, but they chose even cheaper. The casing was also felt to be inferior than the original. The use of PAL versions for NTSC developed titles was curious, running at slower speeds, which further hurt playability. The game library itself was seen as underwhelming, omitting major PlayStation icons such as Crash Bandicoot, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. The selection missed more than it hit.

Overall, the PlayStation Classic was labelled by many as a nostalgia-driven cash‑grab attempt that failed to match the polish or excitement generated by Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic Editions.
