Nichibutsu Mahjong: Joshikō Meijinsen

ニチブツマージャン 女子高名人戦

A 1995 tournament-style mahjong game featuring 16 high school girl opponents and a quest to conquer four major titles. It is remembered for its high-quality 2D anime aesthetic and for being one of the foundational character-driven board games in the early PlayStation library.

Description

Nichibutsu Mahjong: Joshikō Meijinsen (Nichibutsu Mahjong: Girls’ High School Master’s Tournament), is a character-driven mahjong title developed and published by Nihon Bussan (Nichibutsu). As one of the early mahjong entries on the PlayStation, it leveraged the CD-ROM format to incorporate a full voice cast and high-quality 2D character illustrations. While Nichibutsu was historically famous for its “strip mahjong” arcade roots, this release shifted the focus toward a structured, competitive tournament framework within a fictionalised high school setting, prioritising the Bishoujo (beautiful girl) aesthetic and professional mahjong rules over the more explicit elements of its arcade predecessors.

The narrative centres on the All Japan High School Mahjong Federation, an organisation that governs the elite competitive scene for students. Players take on the role of a rising challenger whose goal is to defeat a roster of 16 unique female opponents, each representing different regions and schools across Japan. The story progresses through the acquisition of the Four Major Titles, culminating in the prestigious Meijinsen (Master’s Tournament). The atmosphere is defined by its mid-90s anime-style character designs, with each opponent possessing a distinct personality and playstyle, often accompanied by taunts and reactions voiced by prominent seiyū of the era.

Gameplay follows standard Japanese Riichi Mahjong rules, presented through a clean, top-down 2D interface. The core loop involves advancing through tiered tournament brackets, where players must manage their points across multiple hands to climb the rankings. A significant feature is the inclusion of an Item Shop of specialised power-ups that players can utilise to tilt the odds in their favour, a common staple of Nichibutsu’s home console mahjong titles. These items allow for strategic advantages like swapping tiles or increasing the likelihood of drawing a high-value hand, balancing the game’s authentic simulation with more accessible, arcade-style mechanics.

Retrospectively, the game is recognized as a bridge between the niche arcade mahjong scene and the broader “character game” market that flourished on the PlayStation. While it lacks the complex 3D environments of later entries in the genre, it is appreciated by collectors for its polished 2D art and its encapsulation of the 1990s high school anime trope. It remains a notable entry in the massive Nichibutsu Mahjong library, representing the period when the company transitioned its focus toward providing a more complete, narrative-driven experience for the home console audience.
