God of War III Collector’s Edition

A violent mythological action game built around cinematic combat and large scale boss encounters.

Description

God of War III Collector’s Edition presents the continuation of Kratos’s story as he battles through the gods of Olympus. The story follows his ascent from the depths of Hades to confront Zeus, framed by themes of vengeance and destruction. The presentation emphasises scale, with towering enemies and elaborate set pieces that place the player within mythological battles rendered in high detail.

Gameplay uses a hack and slash system with chained blades, heavy and light attacks, grappling, and environmental interaction. The Collector’s Edition package expands the release with a sculpted Pandora’s Box case, an art book, downloadable content vouchers, and a soundtrack disc. It is closely related to the earlier God of War titles on PlayStation 2 and God of War: Chains of Olympus on PSP, and it is often compared with other contemporary action titles such as Bayonetta for its combat systems and spectacle.

At release the game was praised for its graphics, scale of encounters, and technical achievement on the PlayStation 3, though some reviewers criticised repetitive combat. The Collector’s Edition had elaborate packaging and extras, which appealed to fans of the series. Retrospectively God of War III was a showcase of the PlayStation 3’s capabilities and as the climactic entry in the original trilogy. It was part of a wave of titles that saw Sony turn the tide against the Xbox platformer. Its lasting impression is of a title that combined mythological storytelling with technical display, reinforced by a collector’s package that highlighted its importance to the series. A remastered version was later release for the PlayStation 4.
