Sensor Bar

センサーバー

A motion tracking accessory designed to enable pointer control and aiming functions, forming the basis of the console’s distinctive control system.

Description

The Wii Sensor Bar is a slim peripheral that connects to the console and sits above or below the television screen. It contains pairs of infrared LEDs that emit signals detected by the Wii Remote’s built‑in camera. By reading the position of these lights, the remote translates player movements into on‑screen cursor actions, allowing precise pointing, aiming, and menu navigation. The bar itself does not process data; it simply provides the infrared reference points required for the remote to function.

Functionally, the Sensor Bar supports all Wii titles that use pointer input, from shooting games to menu navigation. It is powered through the console’s accessory port, though third‑party versions often use battery packs or USB connections. The bar is lightweight and unobtrusive, designed to blend with home entertainment setups. Given it’s relatively passive nature, many players improvising replacements using infrared light sources, with even candles.

Although the motion controls started to fall out of favour by the Wii U, Nintendo continued to support it with a dedicated port to power the accessory to maintain backward compatibility. In the years proceeding the Wii’s development underlying improvements in technology such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and image recognition for camera tracking provided more integrated methods of motion controls rendering the Sensor Bar redundant.

Upon release the Sensor Bar was praised for enabling intuitive motion and pointer controls, though it was noted that its reliance on line‑of‑sight could be disrupted by distance or lighting conditions. Retrospectively it was a simple but essential part of the Wii’s hardware ecosystem that defined the console’s approach to interactive play.
