Darksiders II

A sprawling odyssey that expands the apocalyptic scale of its predecessor by introducing deep loot mechanics and non-linear exploration. It represents the franchise’s transition from a linear hack-and-slash toward a more complex, RPG-heavy structure. The story is in parallel to the original game focusing on a sense of monumental burden and gothic majesty through the perspective of the most feared Rider of the Apocalypse.

Description

Darksiders II follows Death as he seeks to undo the crime his brother, War, is accused of committing: the premature end of humanity. The journey spans the Forge Lands, the Kingdom of the Dead, and other celestial realms, focusing on a quest to reach the Tree of Life. The atmosphere is stark, eerie, and grand, driven by the distinct, chunky character designs of Joe Madureira and a haunting score by Jesper Kyd. It creates a sense of exploring a dying universe where ancient beings and colossal architecture dwarf the protagonist.

Gameplay blends fast-paced, character-action combat with a randomised loot system and Zelda-style dungeon exploration. Death is significantly more agile than War, utilizing a “scythe-and-secondary-weapon” system that rewards fluid dodging and aerial combos over heavy blocking. Mechanics include a dual-branch skill tree (Harbinger for physical prowess vs. Necromancer for arcane summons), wall-running platforming, and complex environmental puzzles. On the Wii U, the GamePad acts as a persistent interface for inventory management, allowing players to equip new gear and view maps without pausing the action, alongside full Off-TV Play support.

This Wii U edition arrived as a launch title for the hardware, marketed as the full experience by including several DLC packs directly on the disc. The game was praised for its visual fidelity and the massive volume of content provided. However, it did suffer occasional framerate stutters and technical glitches that persisted from the original 2012 release. While the later Deathinitive Edition brought improvements to subsequent consoles, the Wii U version remains unique for its dedicated second-screen integration, which significantly streamlines the game’s heavy emphasis on gear management.  Critics lauded the GamePad integration as a genuine improvement over other versions, specifically for how it handled the frequent loot drops. Overall it was one of the Wii U’s most competent mature launch titles.
