Need for Speed

A reboot of the long‑running racing franchise that aimed to revive the series’ street‑racing roots with a focus on car culture, customisation, and open‑world exploration.

Description

Need for Speed (2015) set in the fictional city of Ventura Bay, a nocturnal urban environment inspired by Los Angeles. Players build their reputation by completing races, drifting events, and challenges, while interacting with real‑world automotive icons such as Ken Block, Magnus Walker, and Nakai San. The story is presented through live‑action cutscenes blended with gameplay, emphasising the underground racing lifestyle.

Gameplay introduced extensive car customisation, allowing players to modify both performance and visual aspects of their vehicles. Handling was designed around a “drift versus grip” slider, letting players tune cars to their preferred driving style. The game required an online connection, supporting asynchronous multiplayer features such as Autolog, which tracked friends’ progress and allowed players to seamlessly encounter others in Ventura Bay.

At release, the game was praised for its visuals, car customisation, and atmospheric night‑time setting, though criticism focused on the always‑online requirement and limited police presence compared with earlier entries. It was a stylish entry that was also transitional, helping revitalise the franchise and set the stage for later titles like Need for Speed Payback and Need for Speed Heat.
