Dead Rising 4
An action‑adventure game developed by Capcom Vancouver and published by Microsoft Studios, Dead Rising 4 is the fourth main entry in the series, released for Xbox One and Windows before later arriving on PlayStation 4 as Frank’s Big Package. It returns photojournalist Frank West to Willamette, Colorado, during a Christmas‑themed zombie outbreak.
Description
Dead Rising 4 was initially released for Xbox One and Windows, with a Steam version following in 2017 and a PlayStation 4 edition (Frank’s Big Package) in December of that year. Set sixteen years after the original game, it revisits Willamette, now rebuilt around the Willamette Memorial Megaplex mall. The story follows Frank West, now a college professor, who is drawn back into the chaos when a new outbreak coincides with the holiday season. The festive setting, complete with decorations and seasonal weapons, gave the game a distinctive tone within the franchise.
Gameplay retained the open‑world structure of earlier entries but removed the strict timer system and story co‑op, streamlining progression. Players could craft an expanded range of combo weapons and vehicles, while Frank’s camera returned with new functions such as selfies, night vision, and investigative scanning. The game introduced “Exo Suits,” granting temporary boosts in strength and weaponry, and featured both zombie hordes and human enemies. Safe houses, side missions, and Prestige Points (PP) for levelling reinforced the series’ sandbox design.
The game upped the scale of the world and the variety of weapons, and saw the return of Frank West, but saw a decline in challenge and tension compared to earlier entries. The removal of the timer system divided people, with some welcoming the freedom and others lamenting the loss of urgency that had defined the series. Regardless, Dead Rising 4 expanded the franchise’s reach and remains notable for its holiday setting and its role as Capcom Vancouver’s final major project before the studio’s closure.
