DirectX 1–6.x
DirectX 1 through 6 is a collection of Microsoft multimedia APIs that established the foundation of Windows gaming during the late 1990s. It handled the critical shift away from DOS, introducing early 2D and 3D hardware graphics acceleration for systems running Windows 95 and 98. Today, these titles almost universally require emulation wrappers to initialise or render graphics correctly on modern systems.
