A side-scrolling platformer built around tactile exploration, cheerful aesthetics, and light puzzle-solving.
Description
Yoshi’s Story is a platformer that reimagines the Yoshi series in a pop‑up storybook world, where players guide colourful Yoshis through six chapters by eating fruit to restore happiness to their land. Unlike earlier Yoshi titles, it drops traditional goal-based progression in favour of fruit collection within self-contained storybook stages. Each level is designed to be revisited with different Yoshis and routes, offering layered challenge behind a deceptively simple façade.
The game was conceived as a follow‑up to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Unlike its predecessor, which emphasised escorting Baby Mario, Yoshi’s Story focuses on self‑contained stages where the goal is to fill the “Fruit Frame” by eating thirty pieces of fruit. Strategy comes from choosing which fruit to pursue: melons yield the highest score, while “Lucky Fruits” change each playthrough, encouraging replayability.
The presentation is one of its most distinctive features. Levels are designed as patchworks of fabric, cardboard, and wood, giving the game a handcrafted, storybook aesthetic. This visual style, combined with Kazumi Totaka’s whimsical soundtrack (he also voices Yoshi), creates a playful, childlike atmosphere.
The art direction and charm were praised but many disliked the low difficulty compared to Yoshi’s Island. Still, the game has endured as a cult favourite, remembered for its unique visual identity and its role in shaping Yoshi’s standalone franchise. I’ve estimated the local release date from the OFLC classification date of 26/02/1998. The game is subsequently be launched on Nintendo’s virtual console and online services.
