A stealth‑action title, combining investigative gameplay with third‑person combat and a dystopian narrative.

Description

Headhunter arrived late in the Dreamcast’s lifecycle as one of its most ambitious European releases. The game situates players in a near‑future society where crime is policed by licensed bounty hunters, known as “headhunter” agents. Players assume the role of Jack Wade, a disgraced former agent who must regain his licence while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the social order. Developed by the Swedish Amuze, it was a PAL-only release in Europe and also briefly distributed in Australia.

Gameplay blends stealth, shooting, and exploration. Missions require players to infiltrate facilities, gather intelligence, and engage in combat, while investigative sequences and narrative cutscenes frame the progression. A notable feature is the use of a motorcycle to traverse between mission locations, a kind of proto-open world mobility and design, unusual for the time. The presentation emphasises cinematic ambition, with voice acting, scripted sequences, and a tone reminiscent of contemporary action thrillers. Its mechanics drew comparisons to Metal Gear Solid, though Headhunter distinguished itself through its cover shooting and investigative gameplay.

This is a combination of one of those late console releases and European releases that most people probably missed. A very high quality presentation that really indicated how much was left on the table for the Dreamcast. Great atmosphere, narrative scope, and technical achievement on the Dreamcast. From my initial play through, it did feel like they had probably intended a much larger ambition but had to scale back the scope due to development or business reasons. Regardless, it doesn’t feel like a half-finished game at all. Headhunter is emblematic of the Dreamcast’s late‑era push toward cinematic storytelling. The game was later ported to PlayStation 2 with a subsequent sequel on PS2 and Xbox.
