Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
バイオハザード コード:ベロニカA survival horror game that was one of the most important transitional entries in the Resident Evil series.
Description
Resident Evil Code: Veronica (known in Japan as Biohazard – Code: Veronica) follows Claire Redfield three months after the events of Resident Evil 2. She is captured by Umbrella and taken to Rockfort Island, where a viral outbreak has devastated the prison facility. The narrative shifts between Claire and her brother Chris, who later travels to Antarctica to confront Umbrella’s deeper experiments. The tone blends gothic architecture and European horror motifs with the series’ established themes of viral mutation and corporate conspiracy, marking a stylistic departure from the American settings of earlier titles.
Mechanically, Code: Veronica retains the survival horror structure of exploration, puzzle solving, and resource management, but introduces fully polygonal 3D environments with dynamic camera angles instead of pre‑rendered backgrounds. This technical leap allowed for more cinematic presentation and smoother transitions between rooms. Combat continues to rely on limited ammunition and deliberate movement, with boss encounters against mutated creatures and recurring antagonist Albert Wesker. The later Code: Veronica X revision added new cutscenes to expand Wesker’s role and clarify narrative details.
Contemporary reception in 2000 praised the atmospheric design, the move to real‑time 3D, and the depth of the story, though sales were weaker than other Resident Evil titles due to the Dreamcast’s limited market. Retrospective reviews remember the game as one of the strongest entries in the series, often cited as a fan favourite and a key bridge between the classic fixed‑camera era and the later action‑oriented direction of Resident Evil 4. Its ongoing reputation is that of a cult classic, valued for its ambitious scope and its role in expanding the series’ narrative beyond Raccoon City. An enhanced port of the game was later released on the GameCube and PlayStation 2.
