Battle Arena Toshinden URA: Ultimate Revenge Attack

A 3D weapons-based fighting game that reworks Battle Arena Toshinden 2 into a Sega Saturn exclusive side story. It combines familiar swordplay and arena movement with a revised cast, new stages, and a darker murder mystery.

Description

Battle Arena Toshinden URA: Ultimate Revenge Attack reunites the Toshinden fighters after a stolen police android called Replicant becomes connected to a string of murders and disappearances. Its creator, Ronron, enters the conflict to recover and deactivate the machine, while the mysterious Ripper searches for his missing sister and pursues Sho Shinjo as a possible culprit. Suspicion falls across the returning combatants as each fighter follows a separate trail towards Replicant and the conspiracy surrounding its theft.

Combat takes place in fully polygonal arenas where fighters attack with swords, whips, claws, firearms, and other personal weapons. Players can sidestep, roll, dash, block, throw, pursue fallen opponents, execute special techniques, and build an Overdrive gauge for powerful attacks, with the Saturn release combining movement closer to the original Battle Arena Toshinden with the combo mechanics introduced in Battle Arena Toshinden 2. Story, versus, and practice modes support solo and two-player competition, while hidden combatants expand the roster to fifteen fighters. The new cast includes Ronron and Ripper, with Replicant and Wolf appearing as unlockable opponents, although several characters from Battle Arena Toshinden 2 are absent.

Battle Arena Toshinden URA: Ultimate Revenge Attack follows the Saturn conversion Battle Arena Toshinden Remix (Tōshinden S), but draws its mechanical foundation from Battle Arena Toshinden 2, replacing that game’s story and part of its roster with Saturn-specific content. It arrived while Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers, and Tekken 2 were setting much higher standards for polygonal fighting, leaving its long-range projectiles, dramatic weapon techniques, and evasive arena movement looking increasingly loose beside more disciplined rivals. Contemporary reception was largely negative, with critics targeting its jerky animation, muddy presentation, uneven physics, camera behaviour, shallow balance, and limited advance over earlier Toshinden releases. The exclusive storyline and fighters gave Saturn owners material unavailable on PlayStation, but they did not compensate for combat that already felt dated beside Sega’s strongest home conversions.
