Detroit: Become Human

An interactive drama, set in a near‑future Detroit where androids begin to question their servitude and fight for autonomy. Features an ambitious branching narrative, with three playable protagonists and dozens of possible endings.

Description

Detroit: Become Human unfolds through three protagonists: Kara, a domestic android who escapes with a young girl; Connor, a prototype investigator tasked with hunting down deviant androids; and Markus, a caretaker who evolves into a revolutionary leader. Each character’s arc can diverge dramatically depending on player decisions, with permanent death possible and dozens of endings available. This branching design is reinforced by a flowchart system that reveals how choices alter the narrative, encouraging replay and exploration of alternate paths.

The game explores themes of identity, freedom, and morality, often drawing allegories to civil rights struggles. Players must decide whether to pursue pacifism or violent resistance, whether to prioritise loyalty or rebellion, and whether to sacrifice individuals for collective survival. These dilemmas give the narrative a layered resonance, though critical analyses of the work have debated the effectiveness of its allegorical framing.

At a technical level, Detroit: Become Human was built on a new engine with extensive motion and performance capture, involving hundreds of actors. The three protagonists were given distinct musical scores by different composers, reinforcing their tonal differences and narrative separation. The result is a highly cinematic experience that blurs the line between film and interactive storytelling.

Reception was generally positive, with praise for the visuals, performances, and branching depth, though some criticism was directed at the handling of social themes. Commercially it was Quantic Dream’s best‑selling title, surpassing eleven million units sold by late-2024. Detroit: Become Human marks the culmination of Quantic Dream’s design philosophy across Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, while also signalling the studio’s transition into multi‑platform publishing beyond PlayStation exclusivity.
