NHL 17
A content‑rich hockey sim that refines its mechanics and celebrates team identity. With Franchise Mode, EASHL, and the World Cup of Hockey, it offers varied ways to engage with the sport, even if its innovations are incremental rather than transformative.
Description
NHL 17 marked EA’s continued push to modernise its hockey series on eighth‑generation consoles. Built on the Ignite engine, it offered smoother skating, more responsive shooting, and improved AI although the latter introduced quirks, like unpredictable puck rebounds and overly passive saves.
The standout mode was EA Sports Hockey League (EASHL), an online co‑op mode where players formed teams and climbed rankings through skill, not microtransactions. It emphasised organic improvement and role‑based play, with unlockable customisation tied to performance. Franchise Mode replaced “Be a GM,” adding team owners, relocation options, and financial management, allowing players to shape a club’s identity both on and off the ice. Draft Champions, borrowed from Madden, offered a quick‑play fantasy draft experience, though its player ratings lacked nuance, making elite picks feel underwhelming. International hockey received overdue attention with the inclusion of the World Cup of Hockey, featuring eight authentic national teams and a full tournament structure. While it couldn’t be played online, its presence added variety and prestige, especially during the real‑world event’s 2016 revival.
Visually, NHL 17 mimicked NBC’s broadcast style, with commentary from Mike Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, and Ray Ferraro. The presentation was slick, though not radically different from previous entries. The Creation Zone allowed for detailed team and arena customisation, reinforcing the game’s theme of identity and expression.
Reception was broadly positive. Critics praised the content depth, gameplay polish, and EASHL’s team‑based progression, though some lamented the lack of innovation and persistent issues with AI and player differentiation. A solid, if conservative, entry that catered well to hockey loyalists without dramatically expanding its appeal.
