Multitap

Games that support/require a multi-tap due to supporting >2 players on early platforms with only two physical controller inputs.

Starting with the third generation of video games, software that supported more than players than controller inputs i.e. two, required a multitap to connect more controllers through a single port. This went through a golden era during the fourth generation, particulary through the sports genre. The Sega Saturn provided a multitap zenith with two 6 player multitaps being possible. Multitaps effectively became obsolete on systems that provided four controller inputs starting with the Nintendo 64. These provided a wide variety of multiplayer experiences in contrast to platforms like the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, which still required the additional purchase of a multitap peripheral. Later generations supported four or more controller input wirelessly as multitaps were consigned to history.
