Tekken Tag Tournament saw Namco deliver a celebratory culmination of the 32-bit era as it ushered in the next generation in late 2000. Released alongside the PlayStation 2 console, the title prioritises fan service and multi-player competition over narrative continuity. Rather than advancing the Mishima bloodline storyline established in Tekken 3, the game is a non-canonical compilation that brings back nearly every character from the first three mainline entries, including long-absent fan favorites like Kazuya Mishima, Jun Kazama, and Armor King. It serves as a definitive historical juncture, closing the book on the classic Tekken engine before the series was fundamentally rebuilt for Tekken 4.

The gameplay experience is built around a frantic, 2-on-2 tag-team system that fundamentally alters the traditional flow of combat.
