A fighting and action title based upon the Ultraman franchise, notable for its unusual hybrid format requiring both a cartridge and a disc to operate.
Description
Ultraman: Hikari no Kyojin Densetsu (Ultraman: Legendary Giant of Light) recreates battles between Ultraman and iconic kaiju, blending polygonal models with digitised video sequences to capture the look and feel of the television series. Stages are presented with cinematic flair, and combat emphasises spectacle over technical depth, appealing to fans of the franchise.
The gameplay is structured around one‑on‑one combat, with simple attack and defence mechanics rather than complex combo systems. Battles are staged in environments that shift between cutscenes and playable segments, giving the game a hybrid feel between interactive movie and fighting simulation.
This game is somewhat unique in that it is one of two “Twin Advance ROM System” (TARS) Saturn games, that use a ROM cartridge in addition to the CD. The disc contained the audiovisual content, while the cartridge acted as a boot key and data store, making it one of the rare Saturn releases that demanded this dual‑media setup. The hybrid format was seen as experimental, intended to improve loading times. Later games instead supported the 1 MB and 4 MB RAM cartridges which copied some the disc data onto a re-usable cartridge, where as this ROM cartridge is specifically for this game only. It’s effectively a Saturn cartridge game supported by the CD providing media assets.
At release the game was noted more for its unusual format than its mechanics. It has limited in depth compared with other Saturn fighting titles, but appeals to Ultraman fans thanks to its faithful use of characters and scenarios. Today Ultraman: Hikari no Kyojin Densetsu is remembered less for its gameplay than for its unusual format, when hybrid media solutions were explored within the Saturn’s library.
