Genji: Kamui Sōran

GENJI-かみそうらん-

A technically ambitious action-adventure PS3 launch title set in feudal Japan. It successfully transitions Game Republic’s stylish combat to the high-definition era that refined the multi-character action formula and delivered a lush, cinematic retelling of Japanese folklore.

Description

Genji: Kamui Sōran, later release in the west as Genji: Days of the Blade, was a day-one launch title for the PlayStation 3 in Japan and the direct sequel to the 2005 PlayStation 2 title Genji: Dawn of the Samurai. Set three years after the events of the first game, the narrative continues the reimagined historical conflict between the Genji and Heishi clans during the Genpei War. The story follows the legendary warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his companion Benkei as they face a resurgent Heishi army bolstered by unholy magical forces. This entry expands the playable roster from two to four characters, adding the priestess Shizuka and the spear-wielder Lord Buson to the ensemble, while maintaining the series’ signature blend of historical drama and supernatural fantasy.

As a showcase for the early capabilities of the PlayStation 3, Kamui Sōran was designed to leverage the RSX graphics processor to deliver what were then considered next-generation visual effects. The game transitioned the series from the fixed, small-scale environments of the PS2 original to much larger, more populated battlefields intended to demonstrate the console’s ability to render hundreds of simultaneous units. It featured significantly higher-resolution textures, complex particle effects for fire and water, and utilised the SIXAXIS controller’s motion-sensing capabilities for evasive manoeuvrers. The core gameplay evolves the Kamui system, a cinematic counter-attack mechanic that allows players to slow down time and execute lethal blows with precise button prompts. The most significant mechanical addition is the Real-Time Character Change system. Players can swap between the four protagonists at any point during combat to chain together unique combos with each character featuring a distinct tactical niche. The game also incorporates a weapon-switching mechanic where characters can cycle through primary and secondary armaments on the fly to adapt to different enemy types.

Genji: Kamui Sōran was met with a respectful but cautious critical response. There was definite praise for the visual upgrade, and the addition of new characters were welcome. However, the story and repetitive mission design were criticised, it also suffered from persistent issues with its fixed camera angles. Commercially, its performance was tied to the limited initial shipment of the PlayStation 3 hardware in Japan; it debuted as one of the top-selling software titles during the launch week, though it struggled to match the cultural impact of its predecessor. Japanese critics generally praised the authentic Heian-era aesthetic and the high-quality voice acting, but they noted that the game felt like a bridge between generations rather than a complete revolution of the action genre.
