Super Mario Galaxy

スーパーマリオギャラクシー

A gravity-defying 3D platforming masterpiece remembered for completely reinventing the franchise’s movement mechanics and for introducing a sweeping, fully orchestrated cinematic scale to the Mario universe.

Description

Super Mario Galaxy saw Nintendo EAD Tokyo launch the plumbing mascot into the cosmos. Arriving a year after the Wii’s launch, during which Nintendo needed to prove the hardware was capable of delivering profound, traditional, “core” gaming experiences alongside casual phenomenon like Wii Sports. The title reflects a bold design decision that moved away from the sprawling, open-ended sandbox exploration of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, opting instead for highly curated, tightly paced, planet-hopping obstacle courses. This entry is also notable for the introduction of Rosalina and the Lumas, expanding the series’ lore with a surprisingly melancholic, optional storybook narrative hidden within the game’s hub world, the Comet Observatory.

The gameplay is built around a revolutionary spherical gravity system. Players navigate miniature planetoids of varying shapes and sizes, allowing Mario to run entirely upside down or around the circumference of objects without falling off. The game progression relies on traversing these diverse galaxies to collect Power Stars to fuel the Observatory. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk are utilised brilliantly; while traditional movement is handled via the analogue stick, players use the Remote to physically flick Mario into a “Spin Attack” to defeat enemies, shatter crystals, or activate Launch Stars. Additionally, the infrared Star Pointer introduces a multitasking element, allowing players to gather and fire Star Bits at enemies while simultaneously executing complex platforming jumps, or enabling a second player to jump in for an asymmetric cooperative “Co-Star Mode.”

Upon release, Super Mario Galaxy received historic, universal critical acclaim and is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games ever made. Magazine and online reviewers lauded the sheer density of creative ideas, noting that brilliant mechanics introduced for a single level were often discarded before they could ever become stale. The monumental, fully orchestrated soundtrack, a massive first for the series, was highly praised for elevating the whimsical platforming into a grand space opera. Retrospectively, a deserving flagship traditional game for the Wii library and a definitive, flawless entry in the 3D platforming genre.
