Infinite Undiscovery

インフィニット アンディスカバリー

A real-time action RPG about an unwilling double, a chained moon, and a liberation army trying to cut the world free.

Description

Infinite Undiscovery is set in a world where the moon has been bound to the earth by enormous chains, causing the land to decay, crops to fail, and light to fade. The protagonist, Capell, is a travelling flute player who is imprisoned after being mistaken for Sigmund, the heroic leader of the Liberation Force, and is pulled into the conflict after Aya rescues him from captivity. The game is a completely new original RPG from tri-Ace, the studio associated with Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile, rather than as a sequel or licensed extension of an existing series.

Structurally, it sits close to other tri-Ace RPGs. It uses private events, item creation, real-time party combat, optional post-game challenge content, and a large group of recruitable party members. It also contains large-scale moments where multiple parties operate through the same dungeon, giving the game a broader “liberation army” feeling rather than only a four-person quest. The game’s main hook is its seamless real-time structure: battles, exploration, party movement, and environmental interactions take place in the same field rather than cutting away to a separate battle screen. Actions based on discoveries can have real-time effects on the world, and there can be situational battles, such as escaping from a pursuing ogre or fighting near dangerous environmental changes. In combat you control Capell while AI party members fight alongside him, with Connect Actions letting Capell draw on companions’ abilities for combat, exploration, and puzzle-style interactions.

The game is notable as part of the Xbox 360’s late-2000s Japanese “JRPG rush” titles. Square Enix positioned it alongside The Last Remnant and Star Ocean: The Last Hope as part of a run of major Xbox 360 exclusive RPG releases. Reception was mixed overall in the West but quite favourable in Japan. Later commentary often points to uneven execution: the real-time menu does not pause the game, the early prison escape is unusually harsh, travel can feel slow, and the supporting cast can feel underdeveloped despite the large party.
