Description
The Invisible Hours was developed for virtual reality headsets and unlike traditional adventure games, it does not rely on puzzles or combat. Instead, it functions as a form of immersive theatre: seven characters act out interconnected stories in real time over the course of a single night. The player is free to move through the mansion, rewind or fast-forward time, and follow different individuals to witness their private conversations, secrets, and contradictions. The central premise revolves around the death of inventor Nikola Tesla, who has invited a group of guests to his secluded estate, each with their own motives and hidden pasts.
The experience was often compared to both stage drama and experimental cinema, with its branching perspectives echoing works like Sleep No More in theatre or Rashomon in film. Contemporary to other narrative experiments such as Her Story or Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, it stood out for its emphasis on simultaneous storytelling rather than linear progression. The Sexy Brutale also employs simultaneous storytelling, with characters carrying out their own actions in parallel whether the player is present or not. The difference is that The Invisible Hours casts the player as an observer who rewinds and follows different threads like an interactive play, while The Sexy Brutale uses a looping day where the player actively intervenes to prevent murders and change outcomes.
Reception was generally positive, with many praising its atmosphere, strong performances, and innovative structure, though some noted that its interactivity was limited compared to more conventional games. It was seen as a bold attempt to reimagine how stories could be told in a medium where the player is less a participant in action and more an observer of truth unfolding from multiple angles.
