A Mario platform game that combines elements of traditional 2D side-scrolling games with modern 3D gameplay. Missing guide card.
Description
Super Mario 3D Land follows the familiar formula: Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario must traverse themed worlds to rescue her. What made 3D Land distinctive was its hybrid design philosophy. Shigeru Miyamoto described it as “a 3D Mario that plays like a 2D Mario,” meaning levels were linear and goal‑oriented like the classic side‑scrollers, but navigated in full 3D space. This approach made the game more accessible to handheld players who might find open‑world Mario titles daunting.
Gameplay features included the return of the Tanooki Suit, allowing Mario to float and tail‑whip enemies, and new moves like the barrel roll and roll jump. The 3DS hardware was used to add depth perception puzzles, though critics noted the stereoscopic 3D was more of a novelty than a necessity. The health system echoed the older games: Mario shrinks when hit, and a second hit as “Small Mario” costs a life.
Commercially, Super Mario 3D Land was a major success. As of early-2024, it had sold 12.88 million copies worldwide, making it the seventh best‑selling 3DS game and the first 3DS title to surpass five million sales. Its popularity helped solidify the 3DS during its early struggles, and received a sequel Super Mario 3D World (2013, Wii U) later re-released as Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021, Switch).
