AR Cards
ARカードA set of augmented reality cards bundled with the Nintendo 3DS at launch, designed to showcase the handheld’s stereoscopic 3D camera and AR capabilities.
Description
The Nintendo 3DS AR Cards are printed with a distinctive yellow question‑mark box or a Nintendo character, and when placed on a flat surface and viewed through the 3DS’s outer cameras, the system would generate interactive 3D models and mini‑games that appeared to emerge from the card.
The standard pack included six cards:
- Card A-1: Start (“?” Card) (CXA-CTR-S-C0)
- Card A-2: Mario (CXB-CTR-S-C0)
- Card A-3: Link (CXC-CTR-S-C0)
- Card A-4: Kirby (CXD-CTR-S-C0)
- Card A-5: Samus (CXE-CTR-S-C0)
- Card A-6: Pikmin (CXF-CTR-S-C0)
The “?” card was the most versatile, unlocking the AR Games application pre‑installed on the 3DS. This suite included activities like Archery, Fishing, and Mii Shooting, where targets and environments popped out of the card in 3D space. The character cards allowed players to summon 3D models of the mascots, pose them, and take photos with them in real‑world settings.
The cards worked by using the 3DS’s cameras to recognise the printed patterns, then overlaying polygonal models anchored to those coordinates. This was an early demonstration of consumer AR, years before mobile AR apps became widespread. Nintendo used them as a playful way to show off the 3DS’s unique hardware features of stereoscopic 3D, dual cameras, and motion sensors. AR Cards was never central to the 3DS’s long‑term library but the cards remain a memorable part of its launch.
